Ramboll partners with National Highways on impactful environmental sustainability strategy

National Highways’ new Environmental Sustainability Strategy (ESS) sets out the company’s long-term approach to managing their network in a more sustainable way. The ESS includes the 2050 vision of a connected country and thriving environment and launches alongside the Strategic Road Network Initial Report.

Ramboll, working with WSP, partnered with National Highways on the development of the ESS, which updates and replaces their previously published Environment and Sustainable Development strategies (2017). The new strategy recognises that environmental issues are complex and interconnected and outlines National Highways’ responsibilities to nature and communities and to deliver a net zero future. These include nine priority areas with ambitions and key commitments where National Highways will benefit carbon, communities, and nature most.

By engaging with various internal and external stakeholders, Ramboll supported National Highways in assessing their current performance, broader strategies, and processes and exploring their motivation, ambitions and the resources required to reach them.

Wojciech Szewczak “From early in the project, National Highways made it clear that they would not be content with anything less than shaping the future, setting new standards, and leading the change in their approach to sustainability. As a result, we have been able to co-create with them a strategy that will be truly transformative in its impact."

Further, the team is supporting National Highways in developing action plans to ensure the successful implementation of the strategy, which offers key performance indicators for measuring progress and provides achievable routes for meeting the ambitions and commitments contained within the ESS.

“As an organisation we are determined to demonstrate that our roads can be, and will be, a force for good. We have been listening to our customers and communities and the Environmental Sustainability Strategy details our ambitious but credible plans to achieve net zero carbon, be positive for nature and enhance local communities.”, said Stephen Elderkin, Director of Environmental Sustainability at National Highways.
